    Currently

    Principle instructor for “Nutrition Education & Weight Management” program offered by Fitness Institute International as well as assistant professor for the “Nutrition and Dietetics” program of Florida International University. With over twenty years of experience as both a nutrition practitioner and educator, Tim Patton has developed the unique capability of making nutrition science understandable to the general public and applicable to the fitness instructor. He has the uncanny ability to take what many consider a dry subject and make it not only interesting but also entertaining.

    Professional Experience

    Since the mid-seventies Tim has been involved with research in and the teaching of Nutrition Science while simultaneously practicing Nutritional Counseling. While at the University of Florida he taught in the Clinical and Community Dietetics Program where he instructed courses in “Introduction to Human Nutrition”; “Dietary Management”; “Nutrition and Disease”; “Community Nutrition”; and “Advanced Human Nutrition”. While at Florida International University Tim has taught in both the Master of Public Health Program and the Nutrition and Dietetics Program. In the latter program, he has instructed courses in “Principles of Nutrition”; “Nutrition and Culture”; “Fundamentals of Foods”(lab science); “Institutional Food Service”; “World Nutrition”; and “Nutrition in Community Health”. Tim has also worked as an adjunct instructor for Broward Community College’s Continuing Education Health Professions Program in which he has instructed classes and workshops in “Diabetes and Diet”; “Nutrition and Cardiovascular Disease”; “Nutrition and Obesity”; “Weighing Success—Eight Weeks to Weight Control”; “Managing Stress with Diet, Exercise and a Sense of Humor”; “Motivating Clients and Self—A Guide to Improving Compliance”; “Wellness: Nutrition, Exercise and Stress Management”; and “What’s New in Nutrition?” As the Assistant Chairperson for Florida International University’s Master of Public Health Program, Tim’s duties have included student affairs responsibilities, program monitoring, staff development, office management as well as public health instruction.

    Committees/Awards

    Since 1982 Tim has been a foundation member of both the American Dietetic Association and Florida Dietetic Association. Since 1989 he has been a professional member of the American Diabetes Association while he has also served with the Florida Affiliate on the Board of Directors as well as the Program Committee for which he had been elected chairperson. In January 1989 Tim was featured on the cover of Diabetes Forecast; the lead article/story highlighted his significant contributions to the field of diabetes education. The Broward County School Board appointed Tim to both the County Wellness Committee and the Nutrition Committee for which he has served as chairperson. In 1997 Tim was the recipient of an award of merit for “Excellence in Teaching”. Because of his significant accomplishments, Tim was chosen to be listed in both “Who’s Who in American Healthcare Professionals” and “Who’s Who Among American Teachers”.

    Consulting Experience

    Tim has consulted with numerous businesses and institutions committed to implementing health promotion and/or nutrition programs for their employees and clients, including assessing health risk, developing & conducting appropriate interventions and evaluation of program activities. Some of the more notable organizations for which he has worked include: “USA Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)”; “Palm-Aire Resort and Spa”; “Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Corporation”; “Rehability Corporation”; “Palm Beach Institute of Sports Medicine”; “Dade County Public Health Department”; California Division of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion” and “Seminole Tribe of Florida”.

    Presentations

    Tim has been a state, national and international presenter for the past fifteen years in the areas of “Nutrition Science” and “Public Health”. The following is only a partial listing of organizations to which he has presented: “American Association of Medical Assistants”; “Association of Nurses in Colleges and Universities”; “American Dietetic Association”; “American Diabetes Association”; “American Cosmetology Association”; “National Broiler Council”; “Georgia & South Carolina Diabetes Association”; “Southeast Regional Universities Health & Wellness Association”; “Florida Diabetes Association”; “Turnberry Diabetes Association”; “Florida Dietetic Association”; “Florida Public Health Association”; “Florida Association of Physical Educators”; “Florida Association of Rehabilitation Professionals”; “Florida Nursing Association”; “Physical Therapy Association of Florida”; and keynote speaker at the “Arkansas Poultry Festival” with Governor Bill Clinton. Additionally, Tim has been a frequent presenter for IDEA’s personal trainer conferences throughout the country (LosAngeles, Pittsburg, New York, San Jose) as well as overseas (Brighten, England).
